Disc one - the album
With their thrillingly strange debut, Roxy Music announced themselves as a band that were unlike anyone else. The singer looks back at how they created a new kind of music — out of Stax, oboes and Marilyn Monroe. M ore than 45 years ago, a new group released their first album. Indeed, their heavily stylised presentation — a model posed archly on the cover in a s pastiche, the musicians inside clad in leopardskin and leather with styled quiffs — could not have been more opposed to the rock modes of the day. Before you even got to the music, the record cover was a gauntlet thrown down — an explosion of glamour in a wasteland of faded blue cotton. And the cover art, I thought of all the American pop culture icons, Marilyn Monroe: selling cigarettes or beer with a glamorous image. But it was a bit off-kilter as well; there was something a bit strange about it, futuristic as well as retro. All that, instead of a picture of the band, in a dreary street, looking rather sullen. Which was the norm. Bryan Ferry was working as a ceramics teacher in a girls' school after leaving art school in Newcastle, having already played with Roxy bassist Graham Simpson in the band the Gas Board.
One of the most notable of the inductees into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame this year is Roxy Music, the pioneering s art-rock band. We aptly begin with the leadoff track to their debut eponymous album — a clanking rush with discordant vocals, discordant sax, discordant guitars, discordant everything. The music here is plainly descended from the Velvet Underground, from the primitive chug of the production to the drone-y and distant vocals, but Ferry had bigger things in mind. Odd for the time, the title had no relation to the actual song, which has something to do with seeing a woman in a car. It was the time of the origins of glam T.
Roxy Music were an English rock band that was formed in by Bryan Ferry —who became the band's lead singer and main songwriter—and bass guitarist Graham Simpson. Alongside Ferry, the other longtime members were Phil Manzanera guitar , Andy Mackay saxophone and oboe , and Paul Thompson drums and percussion. Other members included Brian Eno synthesizer and 'treatments' , Eddie Jobson synthesizer and violin , and John Gustafson bass. Although the band took a break from group activities in and again in , they reunited for a concert tour in , and toured together intermittently over the next few years. Ferry frequently enlisted band members as session musicians for his solo releases.
